Bonne journée à tous!

I just got this photo of the girls from Camille this morning and thought I'd share it with you all.  Aren't they cute?

Meet Abigael!

Jonathan & Debbie are the happy parents of their second child (a girl, of course, perpetuating the family tradition of gender alternation) and a sister for little Ruben, or "Bala" as he is affectionately known.

Abigael Rosemary Ingrid Neve was born at home (51 rue du val de Loir in Marçon) at 02:45 this morning, the 22nd of November—both mother and baby are doing well.  For the record, the registrar at the mairie said that no one has been born in Marçon for over 25 years!

God bless Roo and Debbie—their faith has been rewarded!

A letter from the President!

Last year I shared with you a book I'd just read written by the President of the Czech Republic, Vaclav Klaus, called "Blue Planet in Green Shackles".  I was very impressed by it and said so at the time.

I hope you've managed to get a copy of the book to see for yourself but I encouraged others here to read it as well. Well, we've had a love affair with people of Czech for some time and have even been to visit them, and they us.

Claire has been trying to get to grips with the language and has just finished reading the book too.  She asked me what I thought of her writing the president to thank him for the book.

Of course, I encouraged her to do so and although Mr Klaus speaks perfect English, she enlisted the help of a Czech friend of hers and got a letter together in Czech.  It finally went off last week.

I hoped he'd reply but wasn't expecting anything so quick: she got her answer in this morning's post!  Here it is as we got it; a short not thanking her for her nice letter.

Apparently his handwriting makes a translation a little more difficult as several words are doubtful.  As soon as we get a definitive English translation you'll read it here!

(I remember when I was a child I wrote to the mayor of Oslo for information and was delighted to get an answer back.  Years ago Rebecca wrote to our president at the time (Jacques Chirac) as well as to the singer Yves Duteil so I guess the idea runs in the family!)

Here's the envelope

And here's the letter

Mediterranean specialties

Here's a little something that Raphaël & Camille brought back with them at the end of their cruise around the western Mediterranean.

From Mallorca and Corsica : dried figs, copa, hazelnuts, almonds, oranges, clementines and persimone. Raph says, "You need to taste this stuff, bought directly on the site of production. The corsican copa is made from free range porc fed on acorns & chestnuts. The almonds and citrus fruits come from Mallorca."

Needless to say we've arranged a mutually-convenient time. :-)

La Couarge-sur-mer

Cycling through the salt marshes.

I can't be more loquacious than the author of this picture (Raph) which I received in my inbox this afternoon.

They've taken a well-earned holiday to the Ile de Ré, where they are old-timers -- even though it seems a surprising choice this time of year!  This picture shows them all enjoying themselves over a local meal and it will have to do until they return in a few days and I can get more details of the trip!
